“To be asked by Trent Nathan to capture the story of his life feels nothing short of magical. Timing in life is everything, and together, through mutual respect and emotional truth, we are creative partners in this extraordinary project, pouring our ideas into it week by week. It allows me to work with his extraordinary life, fashion archives, artworks, and his creativity, revealing it in ways that feel deeply alive and modern. This wonderful project lights up my own heart every minute I am working on it, and I hope, when it is finished, it will light up yours too.”  Coty Farquhar

The forthcoming book on the life of Trent Nathan AM and the future major retrospective, are designed and curated by Australian creative director, editor, and founder of Styling Magazine, Coty Farquhar.

With more than 45 years in the creative industry as an editor, visual artist, creative director, and designer, from her early career at Vogue Living and Vogue Entertaining Guide in the 1980s, through the decades that followed as a fashion and beauty editor, photographic stylist, curator, visual storyteller, and publisher of her own digital magazine (read by millions worldwide), Coty brings a deeply intuitive, creative, and historically informed perspective to this project.

Working closely together as creative partners, Coty and Trent are shaping a brand new and exciting body of work. Together, they are building not only the history of Trent Nathan’s remarkable fashion career and archives, but also the spirit of who he is today, still designing, still writing, and still creating. This is a real-time journey of creation: crafting a beautifully produced book in both hardcover and digital form, while developing a modern and major Australian retrospective.

Coty lives and runs her design studio in Bowral, at Retford Park, the historic country estate of Sir James Fairfax AC, and also home to the Southern Highlands Regional Gallery, Ngununggula. Retford Park is a place of rare cultural beauty and creative spirit. James Fairfax understood deeply the power of art and the enduring role creativity plays in shaping a life. In 2016, he gifted his historic home and magnificent gardens to the National Trust (NSW), ensuring its legacy would continue as a place of lasting cultural and public significance.

Coty was invited by the National Trust seven years ago to design and curate a major creative event in honour of Sir James Fairfax. She was also invited to run her design business from James Fairfax’s private studio/archive building, and now from the cottages on the estate.

It is here that the Trent Nathan archives are held, and where this extraordinary book and retrospective are being created, within the quiet beauty of the Retford Park gardens.
